Today’s Project: Worm Bed

Turning a Bathtub into a Worm Bed | DIY Worm Farm for Composting

Believe it or not, Dan and my brother Mike were worm farmers when we were kids! Growing up next door to each other in a suburban neighborhood, they built a thriving worm bed in the side yard—home to thousands of wriggling compost champions. Fast forward a few decades, and Dan is putting that childhood experience to work again—this time turning an old portable bathtub into a DIY worm farm! We’ve spent the last year learning more about composting, and as our greenhouse nears completion and we plan out our in-ground garden beds, it’s time to level up our composting game—both in skill and volume. We are appreciative of the many YouTube videos that we have watched to get us up-to-date! Composting Tips we have noted: Choose a shady spot to keep your worm bed cool and prevent overheating. Drill drainage holes to keep moisture balanced and avoid soggy conditions. Layer bedding materials like shredded newspaper, cardboard, and aged compost. Feed your worms small amounts of fruit and veggie scraps—no meat or dairy! Harvest the worm castings every few months for a nutrient-rich boost to your garden soil. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to expand your composting setup, we hope this inspires you to get creative and reuse what you have on hand. Happy worm farming!
